I, Kiwinewt, am a TechnoHippy.

Technohippies are a breed of their own. They are not malicious, but only interested in the way things work. They have a broad wisdom of many different technologies. Ignorance and hatred is looked down upon by the technohippy. The technohippy embraces the environment and will do as much as they can to protect it and help it flourish. All in all, a technohippy is a philosophically-open eccentric geek.

Natural Wood Raised Garden

Posted by kiwinewt on 4 January, 2010

I think that this is one of the better instructables I have seen lately. I think that this is a really awesome way of utilizing branches that come out of the garden but would otherwise take a couple of years to rot down. This is definately something that I will build once we get our [...]

Soap Nuts Review

Posted by kiwinewt on 22 November, 2009

A while ago I was given a bag of soap nuts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapindus). I have just finally gotten around to making up some liquid soap from them.
The instructions that come with them say to use a cup of soap nuts to a litre of water and simmer for 20 minutes, which I followed. Oddly enough, the [...]

Compost!

Posted by kiwinewt on 12 July, 2009

Heh. Just turned over the compost bin. After getting through the newly added stuff, the compost underneath looked GOOOOOD! And by the time spring comes around I should actually have good compost to dig in to the soil. Huzzah!
I would post pics, but I forgot to take the camera out with me… And we are [...]

Harvest

Posted by kiwinewt on 5 June, 2009

So I managed to get off work early today and got the frost damage sorted. It wasn’t as bad as I first thought – just had to get rid of the tomatoes.
I moved the boxes around so they are up against the north-facing end of the garden – in front of the herb garden and [...]

Current Garden Layout

Posted by kiwinewt on 4 June, 2009

Silly little diagram of the garden how it is at the moment. Not to scale
Brown = vege beds
Yellow-brown = brick bed. currently with borage and weeds….
Red = compost bin
Blue = shed
Green = tree
Grey pentagram = Washing Line
Grey = path
Pink = herb/little bed
So much I would love to do to this if the house was ours…

I know it’s not the shortest day yet, but this has just gone in to the garden

And after it’s planted and covered with leaves for warmth (the tomatoes are long gone now)

Planning

Posted by kiwinewt on 1 June, 2009

See! It’s the next day and I am posting! Progress!
This year I am going to try growing my seeds in pots like these (after I run out of my stash of plastic post saved from this year!) http://www.geocities.com/newspaperpots/
Also, I am going to try the native american practice of growing corn, squash and beans together. The [...]
