New Year, New Blog

Well.

Kiwinewt.Geek is no more. Well… as a blog it is no more. As a company it is now going strong.

I have decided to move my blog over to Technohippy.geek.nz because I thought it more suited where I am, where I want to be and how I am going to get there.

This last year has been really interesting. I have given up my bachelor life, started my own company, completed my certificate in Organic Horticulture and had my entire world view changed. No longer do I just want to do programming or web development or whatever, I want to do them in such a way that I can help out people, the environment and my family. If this means I have to plant trees, so be it. If it means I have to protest the National Government, count me in. If it means… well you get the picture.

I must say that watching Julie and Julia the other night gave me a lot of inspiration and did show a bit of what the future holds with regards to this – to say that there will be trials and tribulations will be a bit of an understatement… I am almost looking forward to the “lying on the floor giving up on everything” then getting backup and getting the last few bits done.

Another part of this is my Project365, which I posted about earlier. Today was perfect weather, really good to go take photos… so what did I do? Went to the beach on a lunch date with my wife. She is so awesome and beautiful sometimes

That all being said, I think its enough general rant for now. I know I want to throw my New Years resolutions in here (and hinted at them a lot) but that will be a whole ‘nother post. More to come tomorrow and the days following… Bring. It. On.

Just trying to get my blog posts to appear as links on my facebook page. Stupid thing doesnt want to, Workbook and Socialite plugins seem to be made of fail too – they post ony my activity wall but dont show up on my proper wall…

Why does RoR not support multi-table inheritance? Theres no way at all (apart from an obscure plugin that noone knows how to use) to get it working without writing SQL views and such, which just gets messy.

It should not be so hard!

When dealing with the Viewsonic vx2025wm, nVidia drivers and any Debian derivative, use the VGA cable rather than the DVI cable. This will save you 2+ years of hassle trying to get it working…

That I didnt end up getting an EEEPC myself. The 701 is too small for me to work on properly, and I can barely see the screen… lol

800×480 is a silly resolution…

Then again, I was going to wait for the 901 rather than the 701 like this is, so the increased hard drive, more ram and better cpu could still have pursuaded me…

I think that if i had a USB keyboard and mouse and external monitor I could live with it, but then where would the point in having a tiny laptop be?

Also, no pics yet – have been too busy just of late. Maybe after the weekend…

Why is it that World of Warcraft has no “piss off I just want to run around not get the sh*t beaten out of me” mode?

I know its all about the quests and defeating the evil (insert choice of horde/alliance here) and everything, but what if I’m in a foul mood and just dont want to fight?!?!

Why is it not possible to find an online API that will allow me to send txts to NZ phones? I just want to send one txt a day at the same time every day, without having to resend it myself each time… Maybe if I could get a really crappy second-hand phone and connect to it via a USB cable it could do the same job – then use crontab to automate it (and use something else to send on demand)

In other news – Ubuntu Hardy + IronPython = good. This + ClassroomPresenter = fail. Classroom Presenter uses too many Windows/Office DLLs and such, so I am either going to have to look at rewriting the code (which should allow it to run without any proprietary software) or create an adapter with the same feature set as the aforementioned DLLs but the ability to call open-source stuff. On the other hand, it is quite fun to see ‘namespace Office not found in namespace Microsoft’ errors…

I am likely going to have to ask Mike for an extension possibly for the assignment due a week on Monday… trying to work out 16 pages of basic code in 2 weeks with other stuff to do != win. If I had slightly more idea of what it was doing I might be able to do it faster, but so far nope Maybe the 9-5 Monday-Friday next week will help me get a grip on it..

I need to do an unclutter of my room, desk, computer(s) and associated stuff. Maybe if I virtualize SuperHappyDevBox and then get rid of it, swap out that monitor for an LCD and have a dual screen setup on Pyrus then I will have more desk space. Pity I cant really do much with The-Gibson or Loki as they both need to be on the hardware that they are on (The-Gibson: basic setup, lots of drives. Loki: server hardware, lots of RAM for VMs). On that note, by the end of the week I should have a pile of stuff to give away, should people ask nicely. this pile will be photoed and put up on LJ on a public post, rather than a crosspost. I’ll also put a quick link with a list of stuff up on here too…
